There are two basic paths to a productive college search. One is to handle the details on your own, and the other is to work with an advisor, someone who takes the time to get to know you, and who understands the college admission process. For many students and families, working together with a knowledgeable guide makes the most sense.
I've been working with students and families for over 35 years, and for half of that time, my focus was the college admission process. Over time, I came to know that process in its detail and variety, and working with students whose achievements and interests ranged widely I became familiar with hundreds of colleges and universities as we went through the searching and applying process together. I have visited college and university campuses and admission offices all over the United States. Whether on campus in Portland, Oregon; Coral Gables, Florida; Lewiston Maine, and Claremont, California; or visiting colleges on the south side of Chicago, high in the Rockies, or on the edge of the Smokies, I gained a respect for the variety of opportunities available to students, and came to understand how important it is to be able to help students identify institutions where they would be most likely to succeed. Some of my information comes directly from admissions officers—I see them on their campuses, at conferences, and when they visit New Orleans—and some of it comes from observing the experiences of students who have attended the same colleges that might be your targets.
Exploring these opportunities and identifying the best possible matches is important work, as is putting together accurate, supportive applications that will enhance your chances of admission. It may or may not be important for you to get into a particular college, but I believe that helping you understand your needs and working to help you find suitable options for college is a worthwhile effort. Helping you through this process is what I do.
